ALLERGEN NOMENCLATURE

This website is the official site for the systematic allergen nomenclature that is approved by the World Health Organization and International Union of Immunological Societies (WHO/IUIS) Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee. No other form or system of allergen nomenclature is recognized by the WHO or the IUIS. Adherence to the systematic allergen nomenclature is required by all peer-reviewed scientific journals in the field of allergy and immunology. Researchers who identify new candidate allergens are asked to submit their suggested allergen name and associated information to the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee before publication of their data. See the Allergen Submission page for details.

The WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-committee was founded in 1984 and is composed of leading experts in allergen characterization, structure, function, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. It is responsible for maintaining and developing a unique, unambiguous and systematic nomenclature for allergenic proteins. The sub-committee also reviews new allergen submissions and decides on assignment of names and incorporation of new allergens into the database.

The nomenclature is based on the Linnean system and is applied to all allergenic proteins that cause immunoglobulin E-mediated allergic reactions in humans. The primary goal of a systematic nomenclature is to define a common language for scientists. As such, assessment of new allergen candidates for inclusion into this database does not involve a judgement on their clinical significance. A minimal criterion of demonstrated IgE binding to the suggested allergen using sera from patients allergic to the specific source is required.
